Biography

Abdus Salam is a Bangladeshi poet, academic, and literary scholar whose work bridges creative expression and critical inquiry. He holds a PhD in English from the Islamic University, Kushtia, where his doctoral dissertation, The Origin and Development of Bangladeshi Literature in English: A Critical Analysis, explored the evolution of Anglophone Bangladeshi writing from the colonial to the postcolonial era. His scholarly interests include translation studies, South Asian Anglophone literature, modern poetry, classical literatures in translation, and comparative mythology.

Mr. Salam currently serves as Senior Lecturer and Head of the Thesis Committee in the Department of English at the World University of Bangladesh, where he teaches courses on Shakespeare, Milton, Modern Poetry, Elizabethan Drama, and Classics in Translation etc. Over the years, he has supervised numerous undergraduate and postgraduate theses, guided interdisciplinary literary research, and actively participated in academic quality assurance and pedagogical training.

He has previously served in several teaching roles, including at Dhaka Imperial College, Dhaka City College, Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib University, and Bangladesh International School and College (Nirjhor Campus). His teaching philosophy emphasizes critical engagement, intercultural sensitivity, and creative pedagogy.

A committed researcher and reviewer, Mr. Salam has published widely in open-access journals indexed in UGC, SSRN, and international platforms. His significant publications include:

1. Poems Written about Bangabandhu: The Poets’ Response after His Assassination — a landmark article that settled a decades-old literary debate about post-1975 poetic responses to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

2. Kevin Jared Hosein’s Trinidadian Creole and Its Location — an intercultural study of Caribbean linguistic identity.

3. The Treatment of Milton’s Fallen Angels in Paradise Lost and Pitfalls in the Similes of the Translated Poems of Nirmalendu Goon — which reflect his continued engagement with stylistics and translation.

He has presented at several international conferences, including the First International Research Conference on Decolonizing English (University of Jaffna, Sri Lanka, 2025), ITD-2024 (Green University of Bangladesh), and the 6th International ELT and Applied Linguistics Conference (Tribhuvan University, Nepal). He was twice invited to deliver lectures by the Progressive Literary and Cultural Society (India) and organised Dhaka Translation Fest at both the Bangla Academy and the Shilpakala Academy.

Mr. Salam is also a poet of five published books, writing under the pen name Raj Reader. His poetic collections — Vrindavan of Love and Other Poems, Raja Asthirbandar Kanda, A Dictionary of Grammatical Terms, Anubade Adhunik Markin Kabita, and The Poet’s Urn: Bangabandhu in Timeless Translation — showcase a range from lyrical and political poetry to translation and lexicography. His works have been translated into Spanish by Mariela Cordero and featured in global literary magazines such as Poémame, En La Más Médula, and Spillwords.

He remains deeply involved in Bangladesh’s cultural and academic life. Beyond teaching and writing, he has trained under the Prachyanat School of Acting and Design, participated in the Gyantapas Abdur Razzaq Foundation’s advanced humanities program, and engaged with literary and philosophical circles such as Khamkheyali Sabha, Dorshon Club, and Pathchakra of Biswa Sahitya Kendra.

Mr. Salam’s interdisciplinary work draws on myth, philosophy, and literary history—reflecting his admiration for thinkers like James Frazer, Otto Rank, and Joseph Campbell. He contributes regularly to national dailies, reviews for academic journals, and gives public lectures on literature, translation, and cultural studies.

In recognition of his literary contributions, Sanjhya Sahitya (Nepal) organized a poetry recital series in his honor in 2024, later featured in the most prestigious Nepalese daily The Rising Nepal under the title “Sanjhya Honours Poet from Bangladesh.”

He is a member of the Bangladesh English Language Teachers Association (BELTA) and a reviewer for the Santosh Journal (Nepal). His current project, Bangladeshi Poetry in English: An Anthology, continues his lifelong commitment to documenting and defining Bangladesh’s voice in world literature.
