Biography
Professor Dr. M. Arshad Ali has to his credit a service career spreading over as long a period as nearly six decades in the academic arena contributing to its growth, expansion and management. After serving as Lecturer in English in Magura College and Principal, Pirganj College for a year, his role commenced with the founder principalship of Pangsa College, Rajbari that grew up, under his stewardship, to be the largest college at the Upazilla level in the whole of Bangladesh, elevating it to the status of a Master’s course offering college under the University of Dhaka.
As Inspector of Colleges of the University of Dhaka for eighteen long years he has rendered laudable service in quality assurance activities in the field of general, medical and engineering education by suggesting and recommending necessary measures for adoption in the colleges under the University of Dhaka.
Following retirement from Dhaka University, he was entrusted with the rare opportunities of performing responsibilities of diverse functionaries like Controller of Examinations, Registrar, Head of the Department of English, Deans of Faculties of Arts and Social Sciences as well as Law, Treasurer and Vice-Chancellor (acting) of Prime University over a period of nearly nineteen years.
Prof. Arshad had been invested with the honor of membership of the Editorial Board for the publication of the Annual Report of the University of Dhaka for twelve years. He had been Director of Research, Editor of journals, newsletters, annual reports, prospectus and publications of various names and styles of Prime University,a sizeable portion of them being his single contribution . Furthermore, he has played the key role in drafting various rules and regulations of Prime University, e.g., Statutes, Service Rules, Leave Rules, Provident Fund Rules, Welfare Fund Rules, etc. During his stay in Prime University Prof. Ali made valuable contribution as member of Syndicate
Academic Council, Finance Committee, Discipline Committee, Construction Committee, etc. He also carried out the onerous responsibility of the Chief Election Commissioner for more than a decade.
He also figures as a Life Member of the learned organizations like the Asiatic Society of Bangladesh and the Bangla Academy. He has authored four books and published more than sixty articles. He has supervised about twenty Honors and Master’s degree awarding dissertations. He has ever been at pains to contribute to social uplift by way of playing roles of founders, advisers and members of institutions, such as Pangsa College, Machpara College, Rajdhani Girls’ School & College, Hossaindanga High School, Gopalpur Mohammadia Orphanage, Madrasa& Mosque, etc.
