Biography

Professor Dr. AQM Shafiul Azam is a distinguished scholar, professor of English, and senior academic administrator with more than 35 years of experience spanning higher education teaching, strategic policy development, and large-scale educational programme management. He currently holds a dual executive and academic leadership role at the World University of Bangladesh (WUB) as the Dean of Academic Affairs and Research and the Acting Head of the Department of English. Combining core literary expertise with advanced qualifications in educational psychology, Dr. Azam bridges traditional humanities instruction with top-tier institutional governance, outcome-based curriculum design, and multi-sectoral research leadership. Because of his broad knowledge and decades of expertise, he has been contributing significantly to Bangladesh's tertiary education by shaping quality-assured programs and advancing academic research.

Dr. Azam holds a Ph.D. in Education System Reform from Monash University, Australia, where his doctoral research evaluated administrative frameworks for inclusive education reforms under the prestigious International Post-Graduate Research Scholarship (IPRS) and Monash Graduate Scholarship. He earned a European Joint Master's (Magistr) through the Erasmus Mundus Fellowship, studying across Roehampton University (UK), Fontys University of Applied Sciences (Netherlands), and Charles University (Czech Republic). His foundational academic degrees include both a Master of Arts (M.A.) in English Literature and a Bachelor of Arts (B.A. Hons) in English Literature from the University of Chittagong. His academic credentials are supplemented by PGD/PDC at University of Cambridge, and the University of Birmingham.

Dr. Azam's professorial career began as a member of the Bangladesh Civil Service serving as a Lecturer, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Full Professor of English across higher education institutions (HEIs) affiliated with National University. Over three decades, he taught undergraduate and postgraduate courses in English language, literary criticism, and world literature while serving as an official external examiner for B.A. (Hons) and M.A. degree examinations. Expanding his academic footprint across the higher education industry, he holds both past and present academic affiliations with numerous local and international HEIs, including University College London (UCL), Charles University, Michigan State University, Florida State University, University of Melbourne, Dhaka University, BUET, Asian University for Women, Daffodil International University, North South University, and BRAC University.

Beyond the university classroom, Dr. Azam brings high-level ministerial and administrative expertise to his academic leadership. He previously served as the Director General and Director of Planning and Development at the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE), and also as the Secretary of the Bangladesh Accreditation Council (BAC). He co-drafted foundational accreditation regulations and facilitated the national rollout of the Bangladesh National Qualification Framework (BNQF). His research portfolio includes authoring peer-reviewed studies on technology in blended education, inclusive pedagogy, and sensory processing in special needs education, alongside representing Bangladesh at over 30 international high-level forums, including the UN Transforming Education Summit, the G20 Education Ministers Meeting, Commonwealth Ministers Meeting, Education World Forum, and World Economic Forum.
